KINDknow [BARKkunne] is a centre for kindergarten research at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, funded by the Research Council of Norway (2018-2028). We strengthen research, practices and initiatives to the best pf children, families and kindergartens. KINDknow supports values for a sustainable future of culture and nature.

KINDknow's core values include Outstanding research: The centre conducts high-quality research and uses courageous leadership to develop theories, methods, practice-developing approaches, narrative knowledge and evidence-based knowledge; Sustainability: The research designs reflect ecological, economic, cultural, social and systemic aspects of children's lives and their rights. The researchers maintain play and exploration, growth, health and formative development of children, staff and families through generating knowledge; Glocality: The centre collaborates with different generations, sectors, disciplines, institutions, countries and organizations. The researchers ensure diversity and representation from many localities and include indigenous perspectives when appropriate. The centre explores meanings of time, place, relationship and mentality; Co-creation, innovation and sharing: Research design is characterized by co-creation and innovation to find problems and solutions that are relevant to the kindergarten sector and teacher education. The centre translates knowledge to children and adults by developing varied and adapted resources.

The OMEP Early Childhood Education for Sustainable Citizenship (ECESC) Awards

The Early Childhood Education for Sustainable Citizenship Awards are accredited by Organisation Mondiale pour l'Education Préscolaire (OMEP), with training and resources provided in partnership with GECCO: Champions for Change in Early Childhood. As an established and recognised accreditation provider, the ECESC Award scheme has contributed to the development of the UNESCO Green School Quality Standards, and as an ‘aligned’ accreditation it shares the UNESCO Greening Education Partnership (GEP) aim of showing that at least 50% of preschools achieve the global objectives by 2030. Initially developed for application in the UK Preschool context, the scheme is currently being translated and adapted for use internationally with our first Bronze accreditation awarded to Napho Children’s Centre in Thailand in 2024. The OMEP Award will be increasingly promoted internationally through World OMEP and the GEP.

OMEP is an international non–governmental and non-profit organisation with consultative status at the United Nations and with UNESCO. Founded in 1948, and operating in more than 60 countries, OMEP advocates for early childhood education and care as a right, and as a tool for youn children to attain citizenship, wellbeing, and dignity. OMEP has been developing research and training resources, and promoting Early Childhood Education for Sustainable Development for more than 20 years in partnership with UNESCO.

GECCO is a registered charity. It was founded in 2017 with the aim of promoting and supporting sustainable behaviours and decision-making among children, their parents, their educators, and carers. GECCO is a major resource provider in support of education for sustainability and has already gained many campaign successes pioneering work on Nappies and Toilet training, Sustainable Food, the reduction of plastics and sustainable procurement more generally.
